Keep hay fever out

Every year, hay fever season seems to start earlier, last longer, or be more intense. If you're one of the 1.5 million Dutch people who suffer from hay fever, the prospect of such a season is anything but pleasant.

A runny nose, sneezing fits, headaches, itchy and watery eyes, wheezing, and fatigue are common symptoms caused by pollen in the air. Most people with hay fever experience these symptoms between May and August. During this period, the wind carries large amounts of pollen through the air. While it’s nearly impossible to avoid pollen entirely, there are ways to reduce your symptoms.

Keep your home pollen-free

  1. Prevent pollen from swirling around your home due to drafts. Simply install a weatherstrip around any gaps in windows or doors. Additionally, mount a door bottom seal or drop seal under the door. This way, pollen quickly falls to the ground, making it easy to vacuum up.
  2. Vacuum regularly with a vacuum cleaner that has a high-quality pollen filter to keep pollen levels as low as possible.

  3. There are also special screen doors and window screens with pollen-resistant mesh that help block pollen from entering your home.

  4. Air out your home in the morning when pollen concentration outside is at its lowest.

  5. Wash your clothes and hair regularly, as pollen tends to cling to them for a long time. Your pets will also need a thorough cleaning, pollen easily collects in their fur.
